Mike Morel
Head Instructor and Skate Faster President
Mike Morel is something of a guru when it comes to ice sports. He is not a famous hockey player. He is not a triumphant ringette coach. He is not even a renowned figure skating choreographer. But when people want to improve their equipment or on-ice performance they seek his advice and expertise. He is your personal O.T.I.S expert!
Most people think that skate sharpening is a fairly straightforward activity — take skate blade, press against grindstone, voila — it isn't. Talk to Mike or his loyal customers and skate sharpening suddenly starts to sound like an applied science. Watch this video clip from the Discovery Channel and you will understand what we mean.
Everything started when Mike could not find a consistent skate sharpening anywhere. It frustrated the avid hockey player to such an extent that he started studying how to properly sharpen skates and attended sports conventions to explore the latest technologys. One thing led to another and he was soon operating a thriving skate sharpening business with 300 regular customers from the basement of his Cumberland home. The volume of customers forced him from his basement to the nearby Fallingbrook Mall where he had established G-M Sports in 1994.
Currently Mike is bringing you to the next level with through Skate Faster.
Mike heads up the Player Profile Analysis part of Skate Faster which greatly assists in getting players the right skates and stick which in turn gives them the edge they need for the performance they want. He also heads our very own Player Development training programs. As well he is the player development and coach mentor for the Cumberland Junior Grads club.
Mike has been coaching and running hockey camps since 1983. All his 5 children have played hockey from as early as they could skate. Mike enjoys working with kids and finds it very rewarding to see the kids that he has coached and instructed over the years still enjoying the game. Mike has coached players that have excelled in the ranks of the NHL, the AHL, and College ranks. Mike has also been lending his experience and skills while coaching Intermediate A Girls hockey.
